Privacy Policy
GroupOut LLC (“GroupOut,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) values your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, retain, and protect personal information when you use GroupOut.
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app, by email, or on our website. Continued use after an updated effective date means you accept the revised policy.
Who We Are
GroupOut is a U.S.-based, location-enabled real-time social networking app for singles. We help people see where the night is happening at participating venues — bars, restaurants, and clubs — and connect in person when both people choose to engage.
GroupOut is not a dating app. We do not algorithmically match, rank, or score you with other users based on appearance or behavior.
When you Go Live at a venue, you can see who else is live there tonight (after you arrive), send a ping, and chat briefly — then meet in real life. Session photos, pings, and most chats are designed to be ephemeral, not a permanent social archive.
Where This Policy Applies
This Privacy Policy applies to the GroupOut mobile application and related services offered in the United States, with initial availability focused on Knoxville, Tennessee and surrounding areas.
It does not apply to third-party websites, apps, or services you may access outside our control.
Version 1.0: Paid subscriptions and in-app purchases are not available in the initial public release.
Data We Collect
You retain ownership of content you create. We process the following categories of information:
Data You Provide
- Account & profile data — first name, age, gender, who you are open to meeting, favorite drink, and interest tags.
- Authentication data — email address (and phone number if you sign in with phone one-time codes when that option is enabled).
- Session & venue data — venue selected when you Go Live, arrival status, and live/dark session status.
- Photos — up to three photos captured in-app with your device camera for your current session.
- Messages — text in ping chat threads, including the opening Send a Hi message.
- Safety actions — block and report submissions.
- Support & feedback — information you send to support@groupout.app.
We do not support linking Instagram, Spotify, or other social accounts in v1.0.
Data Generated or Collected Automatically
- Location data — for venue discovery, Go Live, and arrival detection. While you are Live, we may collect location in the background to detect when you leave the venue and automatically Go Dark. We do not show your precise GPS coordinates or a personal map pin to other users.
- Camera data — in-app photo capture when you take session photos.
- Usage data — Go Live / Go Dark, pings, messages, and feature usage.
- Device & technical data — IP address, device type, OS, app version, and crash logs.
- Push notification tokens — if you enable notifications.
Data We Do Not Collect (v1.0)
- Payment or billing data.
- Government ID, biometric face templates, Face ID / TrueDepth scans, or third-party identity-verification face geometry.
- Algorithmic “match” or attractiveness scores from your photos.
- Continuous location when you are not using location features or not Live with background location enabled.
Face Data (Session Photos)
GroupOut does not use Apple Face ID, TrueDepth, or other device biometric face-recognition technology. We do not create, store, or compare mathematical face templates or biometric identifiers.
Users voluntarily capture up to three in-app camera photos for the current night. The first photo is intended to show the user’s face so others at the same venue can recognize them in person. These are ordinary photographs (JPEG), not biometric scans.
What face-related data we collect
- One optional-but-expected face photo (first of three session photos), plus up to two additional session photos (outfit and vibe), captured only through the in-app camera.
- We do not extract or store facial geometry, face maps, or biometric templates from these images.
How we use it
- Display your session profile (including face photo) to other users who are Live and arrived at the same venue tonight.
- Automated safety screening for explicit or policy-violating content (see Automated Photo Moderation below).
- Operate tonight-only sessions — photos are replaced when you retake them or when the session ends.
We do not use session photos or face photos to algorithmically match, rank, or score users by appearance.
Sharing & storage
- Other users at your venue (when you are Live and arrived) may see your session photos in the in-venue roster.
- Sightengine (image moderation provider) receives photo pixels temporarily for automated policy screening only — not for identity recognition or advertising.
- Supabase (cloud hosting, United States) stores photo files in a private storage bucket and associated database fields.
We do not sell face data or session photos. We do not share them with venue partners for their independent marketing.
Retention
Session photos (including face photos) are ephemeral: retained for the current night only — up to 8 hours from capture, cleared by 4:00 a.m. local time the next morning if still held, or sooner when replaced or your session ends. See How Long We Retain Data below.
Automated Photo Moderation
Before session photos are stored or shown to other users, they may be sent to our third-party image moderation provider (Sightengine) for automated analysis to detect explicit, offensive, or policy-violating content.
- Photos are transmitted securely for analysis and are not used to match you with other users.
- If a photo fails moderation, it is not published and you are prompted to retake it.
- We may retain moderation logs (pass/fail, timestamp, user identifier) for safety and abuse prevention.
How We Use Data
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you.
- Show venue activity and, after you arrive, who is live at your venue tonight.
- Enable pings, chat, mutual IRL confirmation, and related notifications.
- Operate Go Live, Go Dark, arrival detection, session expiry, and automatic Go Dark when you leave while Live.
- Screen session photos for safety and policy compliance.
- Process block and report actions and enforce our Terms.
- Maintain security, prevent abuse, and comply with law.
- Improve the Service using aggregated trends.
We do not use your photos to algorithmically rank, score, or match you with other users based on appearance.
How We Share Data
- Other users at your venue — when you are Live and arrived, others at the same venue may see your session profile in the roster.
- Service providers under contract, including Supabase (auth, database, storage), Google (Maps/Places), Sightengine (image moderation), Apple/Google (app distribution and push), and analytics or crash tools as enabled.
- Moderation & safety — to investigate reports and enforce our Terms.
- Legal & safety — when required by law or to protect rights and security.
- Business transfers — merger, acquisition, or restructuring (with notice where required).
- Aggregated or de-identified data — insights that do not reasonably identify you.
We never sell your personal information. We do not sell or share user contact lists with venue partners for their independent marketing.
How Long We Retain Data
- Account & profile — while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward.
- Session photos — for the current night only: up to 8 hours from capture, cleared by 4:00 a.m. local time the next morning if still held, or sooner when replaced or your session ends.
- Chat messages — ephemeral by design. Non-IRL threads are removed on a nightly cycle. After mutual IRL confirmation, chat remains for 24 hours, then is removed for both parties.
- Reports & safety records — as needed for investigations and legal compliance.
